With the closure of the Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the removal of SPEED -The Ride has begun by Breslin Builders. The coaster is being carefully disassembled to allow for relocation/reinstallation on the south end of the strip at Akita Plaza, across from Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.
Breslin Builders, along with Chetak Development, is working with Premier Rides (the original coaster designer and installer), to relocate and reuse as much of the unique shuttle coaster as possible, with the midsection being redesigned to work within and over the existing site and a parking lot. New and exciting curves and bends are expected to be added to the ride as well.
The coaster, which debuted in 2000 and operated for 11 years at its previous location, uses a LIM (linear induction magnet) launch system to propel its train at speeds up to 70mph, through a vertical loop and up its iconic 224-foot-tall spike, which serves at its reversing point.
