Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (SCBB) has announced a new $5.5 million spinning roller coaster for next summer. Undertow, manufactured by Maurer Söhne of Germany, will take over the location of Hurricane at the north end of the boardwalk. Hurricane, which has operated at SCBB since 1992, has been sold to Western Playland in New Mexico. Its last day of operation at SCBB is September 3.

Undertow's seven individual cars will seat riders in pairs, back-to-back. In addition to the 50-foot lift hill, other elements include an Immelmann turn (banked at 80 degrees), a 360-degree carousel spin, a slalom section and plenty of sharp curves, twists, turns and drops along 1,410 feet of track. Top speed is expected to reach 40 miles per hour.

With the recent removal of Pandemonium at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, Undertow will be the only spinning coaster in northern California.

Undertow is scheduled to open Summer 2013. Until then, you can catch the promotional video here.
